Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 65, size 20: 4 skeins
White and 1 skein each Shd. Lavenders, Shd. Pinks Shd. Yellows, Shd. Blues and
Shd. Greens, sufficient for 4 Place mats and 4 Napkins; or
Lily MERCROCHET
Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 161, Size 20: 5 balls White and 1 ball each Shd.
Lavenders, Shd. Pinks, Shd. Yellows, Shd. Blues, Shd. Peaches and Shd. Greens,
sufficient for 4 Place Mats and 4 Napkins. For smaller Mats, omit the Shd.
Pinks.
No. 12 Steel Crochet Hook.
1 1\2 yds. linen or Indian Head in
Coral.
Changes for smaller Place Mats are given in parentheses.
PLACE MAT (Size - 16 inches):
BORDER: Starting on inner edge with White, * (ch 7, dc in 7th ch from hook)
13 times, ch 7, sl st in 7th ch from hook for a p; repeat from * 9 times (10
sections). (For a smaller Mat for a small table, make only 8 sections). With row
untwisted, join with sl st.
Rnd 2: Working on the straight edge of last row,
ch 3, * holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make 4 dc over bar of next
dc, y o and draw thru all 5 lps on hook at same time (4-dc Cluster); (dc between dc,
4 dc over bar of next dc) 11 times, dc between dc, (4 dc over next dc) made into
a Cluster, dc at base of next p; repeat from * around; join to ch-3.
1st SCALLOP: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 29 dc, ch 24 marking 2d ch with a pin, remove hook from lp, insert it back in marked st, catch lp and draw thru (ring made to left of chain).
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 27 sc in ring, sl st at base of ring, sc around ch-1 stem of ring, sc in next 8 dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 4, turn, dtr in 3d sc on ring, (ch 4, sk dtr in next sc) 11 times, ch 4, sk 7 sc from of ring, sl st in next sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, turn, (4 sc in each sp, sc in each dtr) repeated around; sc in next 7 dc.
Rnd 5: Ch 7, turn, sk 4 sc on scallop, dtr in next sc, (ch 7, sk 4 sc, dtr in next sc) 11 times, ch 7, sk 6 sc from end of last rnd, sl st in next sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, turn, (7 sc in each sp, sc in each dtr) repeated around; sc in next 8 dc.
Rnd 7: Ch 9 (ch 10 for smaller size Mat), turn, sk 7 sc on scallop, dtr in next sc, * ch 9 (10), sk 7 sc, dtr in next sc; repeat from * 3 times, make the next 3 sps of ch-10 (ch-11) and the next 5 sps of ch-9 (ch-10), sk 7 sc from end of last row, sl st in next sc.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, turn, (11 sc in next sp, sc in next dtr) 3 times (12 sc in each sp around for smaller size), (ch 10, sl st in last sc for a p, 11 sc in next sp sc in next dtr) 8 times, 11 sc in next sp, sc in next dtr, 11 sc in next sp; sc in next 7 dc to center dc in angle between, scallops.
2d SCALLOP: ** Repeat 1st Scallop thru Rnd 7.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, turn, 11 (12) sc in next sp, sc in next dtr, sl st across in corresponding sc on 1st Scallop, 11 (12) sc in next sp, sc in next dtr, join to corresponding sc on 1st Scallop, 11 (12) sc in next sp, sc in next dtr, ch 5, sl st in next p on 1st Scallop, ch 5, sl st back in last sc; make 11 (12) sc in the next 7 sps, sc and a ch-10 p in the next 7 dtr; 11 (12) sc in next 3 sps, sc in each dtr,--to complete Scallop; sc in next 7 dc to center dc in angle. Repeat from ** around, joining 1st and last Scallops. Fasten off.
Stretch and pin Border right-side-down in a true circle, pinning down each p around edge and each point on inside edge. Steam and press dry thru a cloth. Cut a cloth circle 1\2 inch larger than center. Baste Border on cloth. Hem crochet down at base of Rnd 2, then sew down each ch-lp in Rnd 1. Cut cloth 1\4 inch outside 1st stitching, turn edge back against crochet and hem down on back of dc-row.
FLOWER: With Shd. Lavenders, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 hdc in ring; join to 1st hdc.
Rnd 2: * Ch 13, sl st in 5th ch from hook for a p, ch 5, p, sk these 2 ps, dc in next 3 ch, dc in next 2 ch worked off tog. for a Cluster, 1 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc on bal. of chain; sl st in next hdc on ring: repeat from * 11 times around. Fasten off.
LEAF SPRAY: With Shd. Greens, ch 28, * sk 1 ch, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next
2 ch, dc in next 2 ch made into a Cluster, dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch made
into a Cluster, hdc in next st, sl st in next st; * ch 16, repeat from * to *;
sl st in 3 ch between leaves; ch 13, repeat from * to *; sl st in 15-ch stem;
cut 6 inches long and use to sew stem halfway down back of 1 petal of
Flower.
Make 2d Flower in Shd. Pinks, 3d in Shd. Yellows, 4th in Shd. Blues and 5th in Shd. Peaches (In Daisy Omit Shd. Peaches and make 2 extra Shd. Pinks), each with a Leaf Spray. (For smaller Mats, omit two Flowers.) Repeat these 5 (4) Flowers and Leaves to complete circle of 10 (8). Sew a Flower on cloth in each scallop 1\4 inch inside Border, with Leaf Sprays curving to right. Steam and press center flat. Repeat for additional Mats.
NAPKINS (Size - 14 inches): Cut cloth 15 inches square and make narrow hem. Make 1 Flower and Leaf Spray and sew on 1 corner.
EDGING: With White, * (ch 7, dc in 7th ch from hook) repeated for length of 1 side of napkin, having an even number of lps; ch 7, sl st in 7th ch from hook (corner lp); repeat from * around; with row untwisted, join to 1st st.
Rnd 2: Sl st to center of 1st ch-6 lp; ch 3, dc in next lp, * (ch 9, dc in next 2 lps) repeated across; ch 10, dc in corner lp, ch 10, dc in next 2 lps; repeat from * around; join to 1st ch-3.
Rnd 3: (5 sc, ch 5, sl st in last sc for a p, and 5 sc) in each ch-9 lp around, with 6 sc, p, 6 sc in the 2 ch-10 lps at each corner; join, fasten off. Sew edge of Napkin. Stretch and pin Napkin right-side-down, pinning out each lp on edge, steam and press dry thru a cloth.
