MATERIALS: The medallions for this spread, when crocheted of size 30 mercerized crochet cotton, measure about 4" square. Approx. 28 of the medallions may be made from 1 ball or skein. They are joined as one works, using a size 10 steel hook, or one that will carry the thread easily. Made of this size thread, the spread is designed to be used over a colored spread of satin or sateen. Coarser thread may be used for a heavier spread.
DIRECTIONS: Ch 9, join. ROW 1: Ch 2 for 1st sc, make 31 more sc in ring, join to 2 ch. ROW 2: Ch 5, skip 1 sc, a tr in next sc, ** ch 2, skip 1 sc, a tr in next sc. Repeat from ** around. Continue joining chs along side till you have reached the 16 ch at next corner. When joining a med to 2 other meds, join the corner 16 ch to the joining of 2 other 16 chs, and also join the 2nd 12 ch, and all the chs along the 2nd side as far as the 16 corner ch. When joining the 4th med to 3 other joined ones, the corner ch will be fastened in the joining of the 3 others.
BORDER: This border may be added, or not, as liked. Make trs all along 4 sides of spread, taking 3 trs under each 6 and 8 st ch, and 10 trs under each longer ch. For the 2nd row, make a tr in every 3rd st, with 2 ch between trs. In each corner, make 2 trs in same st with 2 ch between. ROW 3: Make 3 trs in each sp with 5 trs in corners. ROW 4: Like 2nd. ROW 5: Like 3rd. ROW 6: Like 2nd. ROW 7: Ch 2, skip 1 sp, a dtr in next sp, ** ch 2, a dtr in same sp, repeat from ** 5 times, (6 dtrs in all), ch 2, skip 1 sp, a sl st in next sp. Repeat around. ROW 8: Ch 5, a tr in dtr, ** ch 2, a tr in next dtr, repeat from ** 5 times, a tr in 1st dtr of next shell. Repeat from ** around.
